Job Description

Reports To: Bosun (Boatswain), Chief Officer Supervises: N/A Job Summary: The Able Seaman (AB) is a skilled deck crew member responsible for assisting in the ship’s navigation, maintenance, and safety operations. They perform a variety of duties, including handling ropes and mooring lines, painting and cleaning decks, and assisting in emergency drills. They also stand watch on the bridge, helping with navigation and security. Key Responsibilities: Deck Operations & Maintenance Cleans and maintains the ship’s exterior, including decks and railings. Paints and removes rust to ensure the ship’s structure is in good condition. Assists with cargo loading and unloading, following safety procedures. Mooring & Anchoring Assistance Helps secure the ship during mooring and unmooring operations. Handles ropes, winches, and mooring lines under the supervision of the Bosun. Assists in anchoring operations and ensures chains and cables are properly maintained. Watchkeeping Duties Stands watch on the bridge, assisting with navigation and lookout duties. Reports hazards, vessel traffic, and weather changes to the deck officers. Helps with security checks and patrols to prevent unauthorized access. Safety & Emergency Preparedness Participates in emergency drills, including fire, abandon ship, and man overboard exercises. Assists in the maintenance and inspection of lifeboats, life rafts, and firefighting equipment. Follows all safety protocols and ensures compliance with maritime regulations. General Seamanship Duties Handles rigging and deck equipment as needed for ship operations. Works with the Bosun and other crew members to complete daily assignments. Ensures that deck tools and safety gear are properly stored and maintained.
