Job Description

Job Title: Third Officer (Third Mate) Department: Deck Department Reports To: Second Officer, Chief Officer Supervises: Deck Crew (when on duty) Job Summary: The Third Officer (Third Mate) is a junior officer responsible for navigational watchkeeping, ship safety, and emergency equipment maintenance. They assist senior officers in daily operations and act as the ship’s Safety Officer, ensuring that firefighting and lifesaving equipment are in top condition. Key Responsibilities: Navigation & Watchkeeping Stands bridge watch under the supervision of the Second Officer or Chief Officer. Monitors the ship’s position, navigational hazards, and weather conditions. Uses radar, GPS, and ECDIS to maintain safe passage. Safety & Emergency Equipment Management Ensures all firefighting and lifesaving equipment (fire extinguishers, lifeboats, life rafts) are regularly checked and maintained. Conducts safety inspections and reports any issues to senior officers. Assists in planning and conducting safety drills, including fire, abandon ship, and man overboard drills. Security Duties Assists with ship security operations and ensures compliance with ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security) Code. Monitors access points to prevent unauthorized entry. Assists with gangway watch duties in port. Cargo & Deck Operations Assists in mooring, anchoring, and cargo loading/unloading operations. Ensures cargo is properly secured for the voyage. Supports the Chief Officer in ship stability management. Logbook & Documentation Maintains detailed logbook entries related to watchkeeping and safety equipment. Reports navigational incidents or near misses to senior officers. Assists in updating ship documentation and compliance reports.
