Job Description

Reports To: Chief Officer, Captain Supervises: N/A Job Summary: The Quartermaster is a senior deckhand responsible for steering the ship, maintaining navigational equipment, and assisting with watchkeeping duties. They work closely with the Captain and bridge officers to ensure the safe operation of the vessel, particularly during critical navigation periods such as docking and undocking. Key Responsibilities: Ship Steering & Navigation Assistance Steers the ship under the direction of the Officer of the Watch (OOW). Assists with navigation during arrival, departure, and challenging weather conditions. Ensures the ship follows its planned course by maintaining steady and precise steering. Watchkeeping & Security Duties Stands bridge watch and assists officers in monitoring the ship’s position. Acts as a lookout during night watches or low-visibility conditions. Reports any navigational hazards, weather changes, or security concerns. Maintenance & Deck Operations Assists in mooring and anchoring operations as needed. Helps maintain navigational instruments and bridge equipment. Performs general deck maintenance such as cleaning, painting, and safety checks. Safety & Emergency Response Participates in fire, lifeboat, and emergency drills as required. Assists with launching and handling lifeboats during emergencies. Ensures life-saving and firefighting equipment are operational.
