Job Description

Reports To: Staff Captain (Chief Officer) Supervises: Second Officer, Third Officer, Deck Crew Job Summary: The First Officer (Navigation Officer) is responsible for the safe navigation of the ship, ensuring compliance with maritime laws and regulations. They oversee bridge operations, monitor weather conditions, and assist in voyage planning. Additionally, they supervise deck crew operations related to navigation and safety procedures. Key Responsibilities: Navigation & Bridge Operations Assists in planning and executing the ship’s voyage. Monitors radar, GPS, and other navigational systems. Keeps detailed records of the ship’s position, weather conditions, and course adjustments. Ensures charts and navigational publications are up to date. Safety & Emergency Preparedness Oversees safety drills, including fire and abandon-ship drills. Ensures proper maintenance of life-saving and firefighting equipment. Assists in emergency response and crisis management procedures. Watchkeeping Duties Supervises the bridge team during navigational watch shifts. Maintains situational awareness to prevent collisions or navigational hazards. Responds to distress signals, alarms, and security threats. Crew Supervision & Training Guides junior officers (Second Officer, Third Officer) in navigation duties. Conducts training sessions on bridge procedures and maritime safety. Ensures compliance with STCW and company safety policies. Regulatory Compliance & Reporting Ensures adherence to SOLAS, MARPOL, and ISM Code requirements. Prepares reports for the Captain on navigation, safety, and environmental compliance. Maintains detailed logs of navigational incidents and equipment maintenance.
